"Shakespeare (1564-1616) meets Scheherazade" or "The night I met Shakespeare". It is a play that explores the art of play-writing as opposed to the art of storytelling. Two literature icons meet and explore each other’s work. A journey that takes us from Shahriar to Macbeth to the One Thousand and One stories to our world today.

The Star of Bagdad - Nazik al-Malai’ka –

The Pioneer of Modern Arabic Lyrics

A Dedication to one of our greatest poets in the Arab world

    A Poetry Salon

“What I have written will revolutionize the poetry of the entire Arab world“ (Nazik al-Malai’ka)

The story is telling her life and the very special moment in 1947 when Nazik al-Malai’ka (1923-2007) had a kind of a spiritual experience, which was the birth of the free verse that was later called “Modern Arabic Poetry”.

Together with Badr Shakir Al-Sayyab, they broke the rules of the “Quassida,” which was the common rhyme form until mid of the 19th century. Their influence on the young generation of poets was enormous.

In the beginning of the eighties, Nazik al-Malai’ka fell silent: “I fell silent because my soul could no longer express herself...” Since that time, she started inviting her friends, the poets and writers from all over the world for tea, talking to them – but this happened only in her imagination.

She died lonely in exile in Cairo in 2007. Her book “The Big Questions of Modern Poetry” is still known until today as an important source for understanding Modern Arabic Poetry.

As a young man, Gibran Khalil Gibran (1883 Lebanon–1931 New York)  emigrated with his family to the United States, where he studied art and began his literary career, writing in both English and Arabic. In the Arab world, Gibran is regarded as a literary and political rebel. His romantic style was at the heart of a renaissance in modern Arabic literature, especially prose poetry, breaking away from the classical school. In Lebanon, he is still celebrated as a literary hero.

Chiefly known was his 1923 book “The Prophet”, an early example of inspirational fiction including a series of philosophical essays written in poetic English prose.

The play is telling about Gibran’s life, his art of painting, talent and close friends Mi’khail Na'ima and Elia Abu Madi; two important poets as well whom he met in New York. Moreover, the play gives us an insight in the yearlong relationship with May Ziade, also a writer and poet. This relationship was based on correspondence only. The lovers never met but they were deeply inspired by each other.

Beside lots of entertainment, you will find “Locked in a Story” highlights one of our most important issues: education systems. Ms. Trunchat, the Headmistress in the play, is focused on rigidity and discipline. Her world is sorted into winners and losers and if you follow the rules everything is perfect. We are stressing our children with such old fashioned beliefs which are simply destructive. Heliopolis University is totally in accordance with the movement of renewing education in Egypt. “The next year is devoted to education,“ says our Minister of Education.

Come and enjoy. We will  let you inspire for a new education system.

The Journey of the Deep End is the journey into the depth and deep feelings of Mahmud Darwish. Darwish was a Palestinian poet and author who was regarded as the Palestinian national poet. He won numerous awards for his works. Darwish used Palestine as a metaphor for the loss of Eden, birth and resurrection, and the anguish of dispossession and exile. And he was writing about love in it’s different meanings. He has been described as the man of action whose action is poetry. When he was reading poetry, he filled entire football stadiums.

Kandil is seeking truth, justice, and Gaballand to help his country when he returns home. So, he starts traveling through different countries, political systems, lifestyles, and beliefs. He has to face hard times on this journey.

The story of Ibn Fatum is a story of a seeker and Naguib Mahfouz gives as an insight of his journey. But Mahfouz is also putting something essential into our focus without naming it. He is genius in describing a political system without naming it.

“Ibn Fatouma” is adapted by Mohamed Mamdouh in cooperation with the Speech, Poetry, and Acting Department of the Core Program.

Transitioning to sustainable food and agriculture systems is critical to tackle malnutrition, social injustice, land degradation, water scarcity, climate change, loss of biodiversity, and agroecology plays a key role therein. In 2018, the World Future Council awarded, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and IFOAM – Organics International, exemplary policies that scale up agroecology, and recognized, in collaboration with the Startup TAGS, effective practices that empower small-scale food producers. Also a number of award-winning experts promote scaling up agroecology. At this event we take a closer look at World Champions advancing the much needed transformation of our food systems and will discuss especially solutions from Africa.

Money as a path of self-knowledge and personal and social transformation

lecture by Joan Antoni Melé Cartañá

Mr.Cartañá  has been a member of the Anthroposophical Society in Spain since the early 1980s before becoming the Society's president.  He has over 40 years of experience in the banking sector, and he's currently the president of the "Dinero y Conciencia Foundation" in Spain, promoting, developing and providing training in ethical banking in Latin America.

    Lecture
    Joan Antoni Melé Cartañá

His lecture will be about self-knowledge, and personal transformation and about how the "disconnection of the human being from its transcendental spiritual essence has led to the behavior of incoherent and destructive life. Only reconnecting it with this spiritual essence will allow mankind to face and solve the problems and challenges we confront on an individual, social and environmental level."
