A SUCCESS STORY:MED-WET Project is Improving Mediterranean
irrigation and Water supply for smallholder farmers by providing
Efficient, low-cost, and nature-based technologies and practices. It is
currently operational in Egypt, Portugal, Morocco, Germany, and
Malta

One of the primary objectives of the MED-WET project is to develop, upscale, adopt, and replicate low-cost constructed wetland treatment technology in rural areas of Egypt. A significant event in this regard was the MED-WET’s Wide Stakeholders Workshop held from December 24 to 26, 2023, at Sekem Farm El-Wahat El-Bahariya, Egypt. This workshop gathered over 70 participants, constituting a diverse group of stakeholders, including smallholder farmers, large investors, end-users, local authority representatives, university students, Sekem community members, and children from various locations within El-Wahat El-Bahariya, Belbies, and Cairo. The collaboration involved the MED-WET team of experts from Heliopolis University.
Professor Dr. Wael Khairy, the principal investigator of the MED-WET project at Heliopolis University, along with his team, showcased and demonstrated the low-cost wastewater treatment site developed under the project at Sekem Farm El-Wahat El-Bahariya. This pilot site serves as a model that can be replicated in various remote and rural areas. The workshop successfully established a new channel for collaboration between diverse stakeholders and the Heliopolis University technical team. Notably, it received a serious commitment from local authorities to allocate a large piece of land in El-Bawiti (the capital of El-Wahat El-Bahariya) for developing the first replication of the successful low-cost constructed wetland treatment technology model.
This commitment reflects a strong willingness to collectively benefit from the MED-WET project’s outcomes, address future challenges related to the safe disposal of solid and liquid wastes, and develop additional water resources for irrigating native crops. The initiation of this action marks a tangible success story, showcasing real improvement in livelihood and water supply for smallholder farmers in the Mediterranean region.
