“Structural redesign and computational simulation of lankacidin analogues to improve anti-tumour activity.”
The objective of this project is to provide a potent anticancer drug which will help save the lives of millions of people around the world. By modification of lankacyclinone C and improvement of the synthesizability of M51, the two themes are expected to lead to microtubule-stabilizing agents which would strongly bind to microtubules during cell division and force them to commit suicide, thus eliminating cancer cells from the body. Another important objective of the study is to facilitate the acquisition of Masters/PhD degrees for the graduate students in the Egyptian team as well as the Japanese team. Egyptian students will be given the chance to travel to Japan and gain experience regarding large scale fermentation processes as well as take advantage of the state-of-the-art equipment which will be necessary all along with the project. Japanese students will have the chance to come to Egypt and train on computational simulations as well as biological evaluation of cytotoxicity and cell culture techniques.

OSP Moringa Oleifera-Dithiocarbamates
Moringa Oleifera dithiocarbamates fungicide assay
The primary objective of this project is to detect and quantify, at the lowest detectable amounts, the fungicidal dithiocarbamate compound Mancozeb in the leaves of Moringa Oleifera by means other than the official GC method. The detection of DTCs by gas chromatography relies solely upon the detection of CS2 gas produced by heating the sample during the steps of analysis; this makes the method incapable of differentiating between different DTCs if present in one sample or their source. Mancozeb (Chemical name: Ethylenebisdithiocarbamate Manganese-Zinc), is one of the dithiocarbamates family of fungicides widely used in agriculture. It can be described as the sum of two compounds: Maneb (Manganese EBDTC) and Zineb (Zinc EBDTC). Issues expected to be encountered in this work include the poor solubility of the compound as well as related compounds in water and most organic solvents. Another challenge is to find and validate a method that is accurate, sensitive, and discriminative between the naturally-occurring carbamates in Moringa Oleifera and the industrial fungicide possibly contaminating the plant.
Study on the detection of mancozeb residues on Moringa leaves by HPLC.
The aim of this study is to provide reliable methods to specifically detect mancozeb residues on Moringa leaves, other than detection of CS2 levels.
PROTOCOL FOR DETECTION OF MANCOZEB FUNGICIDE RESIDUE BY THIN LAYER CHROMATOGRAPHY SPOT TEST
The aim of this protocol is to test and validate a thin layer chromatographic method for the detection of Mancozeb fungicide residue against aqueous/ ethanolic Moringa Oleifera leaves extract. TLC spot test is simple, inexpensive and reliable amongst the more sophisticated methods of analysis. Mancozeb (ethylene-bis-dithiocarbamate Manganese-Zinc), one of the dithiocarbamate fungicides, is a mixture of Maneb (Manganese ethylene-bis-dithiocarbamate) and Zineb (Zinc ethylene-bis-dithiocarbamate).
